The Recipient of the 2018 Roger Connellan Award

The Chairman of the Connellan Airways Trust, Mr. Mark Coffey today announced Mr. Hugh Lord to be the winner of the 2018 Roger Connellan Award for Excellence in Aviation. He will receive $20,000.

Hugh lives on the family sheep and cattle producing property Thackaringa Station 41km west of Broken Hill NSW. The Trust will provide financial assistance for Hugh to complete his instructor rating in 2019 in support of his goal to open a flight school providing the people of Broken Hill and surrounding regions with high quality flight instruction.

Hugh is passionate about sharing his love of flying and was fortunate to complete his licence and endorsements under highly experienced and knowledgeable pilots but had to travel considerable distance to do so. He says “as people of the outback are often time and resource poor the limited access to pilot training is an important issue. There are many accidents I believe could have been avoided had the individual had access to advanced outback training. My intention is to provide a purpose designed service to specifically equip pilots with skills and knowledge to overcome the risks of outback aviation”.

Mark Coffey says “Hugh has demonstrated his commitment to aviation in outback Australia through the completion of his private pilot license and commencement of his commercial license. Aviation plays a vital role in outback Australia and Hugh is supporting increased access to pilot training whilst also improving aviation safety which is in the spirit of the Award. The board was impressed with the dedication of Hugh and believes he can make a major contribution to Outback Australia and its next generation of pilots and are very pleased to announce this Award”.
